Aselsan signs 523 million euro air defence development deal with Turkey's SSB
Aselsan signed a 523 million euro contract with Turkey's SSB on 26 October 2026 to develop a New Generation Air and Missile Defence System, without publishing a name, range or schedule.

Aselsan, one of Turkey's largest defense electronics firms, reported the contract to the Public Disclosure Platform, KAP, on 26 October 2026 and put its total value at 523 million euros. The counterparty is the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye Secretariat of Defence Industries, known as SSB, the country's central procurement and export authority. The order covers development work on a New Generation Air and Missile Defence System.
The disclosure leaves out details that would let a buyer or rival assess the system. Aselsan did not disclose the system's name, configuration, implementation schedule, interception range or the missile categories it is meant to counter, Defence24 reported. SSBulten reported that the system is designed to destroy long-range, high-altitude aerial threats using domestically developed Turkish engineering. The report did not name the system. ShiftDelete reported that the system is designed against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones.
What the money buys
The 26 October award is development funding, not a delivery order. On 5 October, three weeks earlier, Aselsan announced SSB contracts worth a total of 2.46 billion euros for the delivery of hybrid air defence systems, Defence24 reported. The new award is roughly a fifth of that delivery package. Development money pays for design and industrial capacity; delivery money pays for hardware. Defence24 described the two orders as complementary directions of modernisation, one adding batteries the armed forces can field and the other funding work for later.
Aselsan chief executive Ahmet Akyol set out the company's air defence priorities in a February interview with the Anadolu Agency, Defence24 reported. He said Aselsan plans to increase target detection and engagement distances, develop further versions of the Siper system and counter drone swarms more effectively.
Steel Dome and the integration question
Steel Dome, or Çelik Kubbe, is Turkey's multi-layered air defence architecture. It is meant to integrate radars, optoelectronic devices, command systems and weapons into a network that produces a common air picture, Defence24 reported. ShiftDelete reported that interoperability with existing indigenous radars, electro-optical sensors and command-and-control software is a requirement of the new contract. Defence24 said Aselsan has not confirmed the new system's link to Steel Dome. For a buyer, that gap matters: a system built to use sensors already in service is a different proposition from one that needs its own.
The export backdrop
Turkey's defence exports passed $10 billion in 2025, a record, and sales to Europe and the United States nearly quadrupled to $5.6 billion, according to Quwa. Ankara targets $11 billion in exports and a place among the world's ten largest arms sellers by 2028, on a sector employing around 100,000 people. European military spending rose 14 percent in 2025 to $864 billion, by SIPRI's count. That spending gives Turkish suppliers a larger pool of potential buyers, but the 26 October award does not show what those buyers would receive.
The next test is disclosure. Until Aselsan discloses a name, a range and a schedule, the 523 million euros buys design work and an option on a future layer of Turkish air defence.
