Bangladesh dengue death toll reaches 445 for 2026

Bangladesh's 2026 dengue death toll reached 445 on 4 November, after six more deaths and 1,866 new hospital admissions in 24 hours, the Directorate General of Health Services said. That is already above the 413 deaths in all of 2025.

The pressure falls on Dhaka's wards and on a health system also fighting measles.

Six more deaths take the 2026 toll to 445

Four of the deaths were in Dhaka Division and two in Khulna Division. The bulletin comes out daily and covers the preceding 24 hours.

Twenty-six people have died in the first four days of November alone.

Total admissions since 1 January now stand at 142,775, against 102,861 in all of 2025. Hospitals have discharged 136,394 of those patients, and 5,936 are still in treatment nationwide. Dhaka Division accounted for 868 of the 1,866 new admissions. Rajshahi recorded 271, Chattogram 256, Khulna 215, Barishal 206, Rangpur 71, Mymensingh 66 and Sylhet 13.

Already worse than all of 2025

The 2026 toll passed the 413 deaths recorded in all of 2025 before the end of October.

October was the deadliest month of 2026. Health ministry figures cited by Reuters put the month's toll at 173 deaths, while bdnews24 and Ajker Patrika reported 174. September recorded 148. The DGHS has kept dengue records since 2000. 2023 remains the worst year on file, with 321,179 hospital admissions and 1,705 deaths.

A measles outbreak is stretching the same hospitals. By 27 October, deaths among children with confirmed or suspected measles had reached 1,240.

Hospitals see patients after complications set in

Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital in Dhaka was treating 279 dengue patients after 67 new admissions in a single day, director Mirza Golam Sarwar said.

Doctors say many patients reach hospital only once complications have set in.

"We are getting many patients in shock. Their blood pressure is sometimes too low to measure, and their oxygen levels are dropping."

Medicine specialist ABM Abdullah linked the severe cases and deaths to repeat infections and to delays in diagnosis and treatment. All four dengue virus serotypes are circulating, which raises the risk of severe illness when someone catches the virus a second time.

Bangladesh has no dengue vaccine in use, though the authorities are considering one as a longer-term measure.

Transmission expected to run into December

Entomologist Kabirul Bashar of Jahangirnagar University said deaths were unlikely to keep rising at October's pace. He said transmission would probably continue through November.

"We may see some relief, but dengue is unlikely to disappear in November. Any decline is likely to be modest, with significant improvement unlikely before December."

Bashar said mosquitoes would keep emerging from breeding sites left by earlier rainfall even as conditions turn drier. Changing rainfall and humidity patterns, partly linked to climate change, are stretching the breeding season and keeping Aedes mosquitoes active for longer, he said.
