Taylor Swift's The Life of a Showgirl claimed the No. 1 overall physical release in Week 41, moving 36,824 total physical units, Luminate said. CD sales accounted for 27,004 copies and vinyl for 9,820. Direct-to-consumer and e-commerce pre-orders generated 98.2% of her physical volume, or 36,148 units.

The 1.52 million total was driven by 880,200 vinyl album sales and 627,800 CD albums, according to Luminate. The company attributed the year-over-year decline to a tough baseline: the second-week market surge for Showgirl in October 2025, one week after the album's record-breaking 3 million-plus physical sales in its release week.

Showgirl closed 2025 as Luminate's top US album with 5.607 million equivalent album units, ahead of Morgan Wallen's I'm the Problem at 5.125 million. It was also the year's top-selling title by pure album sales and the top seller on CD, vinyl, cassette and digital download, Luminate said. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated Oct. 18, 2025 with 4.002 million units and spent 12 nonconsecutive weeks atop through Jan. 10, 2026, Billboard reported.

Luminate's August report counted 65 physical and digital product releases for Showgirl, against 67 for Midnights and 54 for The Tortured Poets Department. Album-to-date physical sales were 4.1 million for Showgirl, 3.7 million for Tortured Poets and 3.3 million for Midnights. The report credits K-pop with perfecting multiple-format releases and describes Swift's approach as similar but amplified.

Through Oct. 15, US physical album sales total 60.27 million units, up 0.2% from 60.13 million in the same period of 2025. After adjusting for the 2025 Swift debut baseline, Luminate said underlying year-to-date physical album sales grew 5.9%.

Independent record stores led channel distribution at 19.41 million units, or 32.2% of physical sales. Mass market retail moved 17.22 million units, 28.7% of sales, up 20.0% year over year. E-commerce generated 15.38 million units, 25.5% of sales, up 0.4%. Direct-to-consumer sales were 6.40 million units, 10.6% of sales, down 28.8%, which Luminate tied to the 2025 pre-order baseline.

Vinyl album sales stand at 33.82 million units, down 1.5% from 34.33 million in 2025 unadjusted, but up 2.6% after removing the Swift baseline. CD albums total 26.10 million units, up 2.6% from 25.45 million unadjusted and up 10.6% adjusted, Luminate said, driven by K-pop box sets, pop collectible packaging and deluxe reissues.

Luminate's weekly figures cover the tracking week of Oct. 9 to Oct. 15, 2026. Year-to-date figures run through Oct. 15.

For food and design stories she checks prices, opening hours and production figures against at least two independent sources before filing. She spends much of her week talking to chefs, curators and designers, and marks the festival and fashion-week calendars months ahead to compare how the same event is covered elsewhere. Outside the desk she runs festival marathons and spends time in independent cinemas and film archives, which shapes how she reads cultural programming and restoration work. She does not publish a review without having seen the film, eaten the food or walked the space herself.
