BMW to launch navigation-guided Level 2 city driving assist in 2027
BMW said on Monday it will launch navigation-guided Level 2 driving assist on city streets in Germany in 2027, taking on Tesla's FSD under new European rules.

BMW says the system leans on active route guidance in BMW Maps to anticipate what is coming. It can position the car on multi-lane roads, make turns, change lanes, take roundabouts and handle right-of-way situations at intersections. It extends the existing BMW City Assistant, which already stops and restarts the car at traffic lights in supported markets. The pitch is one continuous assist from motorway through country roads into the city centre, rather than separate features.
The update also adds BMW Symbiotic Drive. Drivers can steer, accelerate or brake without switching off the assistance, and the system adapts to their style. Sensors analyse steering behaviour and gaze direction, so lane-keeping interventions come only if the car drifts or a collision is imminent, electrive reported.
BMW board member Joachim Post called the expansion "a real improvement in driving comfort".
Still Level 2, still the driver's responsibility
BMW keeps the system at SAE Level 2. That sits on a scale running from Level 0, no assistance, to Level 5, fully self-driving. The driver must watch the road and be ready to take over.
An in-cabin camera enforces that. The assist functions operate only while it detects an attentive person at the wheel. On motorways BMW allows hands-off driving; on local roads drivers must keep their hands on the wheel. Ford's BlueCruise and GM's Super Cruise sit at the same level, Carscoops noted.
That distinction matters because the safety argument is not settled. The Verge reported that researchers worry about driver attention and slower reaction times as partial automation spreads, and that most driver-assist systems have been found less safe than ordinary human driving. Drive Tesla Canada reported that in BMW's own demonstration video the system struggled with parked cars and the driver had to intervene. BMW has been here before: it offered a Level 3 system on the 7 Series, then pulled back from L3 because of lidar cost and weak customer uptake, Carscoops reported.
Hardware is already fitted, price is not
The cameras and sensors the city functions need are already standard on the iX3, iX4, X5, 3 Series and 7 Series. Activation comes through an over-the-air software update, with no dealer visit or extra hardware. Status messages appear under the windscreen in BMW's Panoramic display, with a 3D view of the route and surroundings on the infotainment screen.
BMW has not disclosed pricing for the city expansion.
For scale, existing comprehensive Level 2 packages run from roughly €1,000 to €5,000 depending on vehicle class and booking model, or about €1,500 for four years on a subscription, electrive reported. BMW has also not announced a US timeline for the feature.
The rulebook behind the launch
The launch depends on new European rules. BMW is developing the system under UN Regulation No. 171, specifically DCAS Series 02. From 2027 those rules will for the first time let assist systems suggest and initiate driving manoeuvres in urban traffic, electrive reported. BMW says an independent technical service has completed the required real-world road tests.
Rivals are chasing the same city feature
Tesla's FSD is cleared in several EU countries but Germany is still reviewing it, and Mercedes is starting a customer pilot in Stuttgart and Munich later this year, Interesting Engineering reported. Rivian plans an in-house point-to-point system next year, InsideEVs reported. Tesla's Dutch approval came through an exemption, while BMW waited for the UN rule that permits city manoeuvres, according to Interesting Engineering.
What happens next
Germany gets the system in 2027, with other markets following gradually. BMW has not announced Canadian availability or timing. The next fixed date is regulatory sign-off, expected in early 2027.
