DFW lifts six Skylink station modules for $4 billion Terminal F

DFW said on November 3 that crews had lifted all six prefabricated modules of the Terminal F Skylink station onto the existing guideway. The heaviest module weighed about 310 tons, roughly as much as a fully loaded Boeing 777.

The station is the rail link to DFW's sixth terminal, whose first 15 gates are due in 2027. The completed expansion calls for 31 gates.

For travelers the milestone changes nothing yet. Workers still have to connect and integrate the six structures, and passengers cannot use the station.

Crane delivery and overnight lifts

Crews assembled every module at ground level before moving it onto the existing Skylink guideway. A heavy-lift crawler crane, delivered in about 60 truckloads and assembled over nearly two weeks, placed them.

Each lift ran overnight and lasted about eight hours. The airport says the overnight work minimized disruption to the live Skylink system and avoided extended shutdowns.

A 15-gate plan that became 31 gates

When DFW began Terminal F construction, officials described a $1.6 billion program with 15 gates. DFW and American expanded the plan in May 2025, more than doubling the gate count. They added dedicated passenger-processing facilities, for about $4 billion in total.

Phase one is a 400,000-square-foot, double-loaded concourse with 15 gates, its own Skylink station and modernised baggage systems, all dedicated to American. The finished terminal is planned for 31 gates, international and widebody facilities, and a pedestrian connection to Terminal D.

The gates will use full-glass jetways. SimpleFlying reports that a fire-code interpretation long discouraged US airports from using glass walls, and that the NFPA dropped its ban on glass boarding bridges in late 2015.

Why American needs the gates

American accounts for more than 80% of the market at DFW, according to Dallas News. More than 30% of American's daily connecting customers and connecting checked bags pass through DFW, the airline says. American also cites about 100,000 peak daily customers and more than 930 average peak daily departures at the airport.

The carrier has moved from nine banks of flights to 13, spreading the same volume across more peaks. View From The Wing's analysis of American's schedule puts average departures per bank at roughly 103 before the change and about 72 after. That is a reduction of about 30%. American says the revised schedule gives passengers greater certainty when weather disrupts operations.

DFW forecasts 101 million passengers in fiscal 2029 and 105 million in fiscal 2030, against 87.4 million budgeted for fiscal 2026.

Inside DFW Forward

Terminal F is part of DFW Forward, the airport's approximately $12 billion capital plan.
