The company said the decision followed several years of survival in a precarious funding climate. It cited rising production costs, increased competition for funds from trusts and foundations, a lack of regular subsidy and, historically, the loss of its permanent home in Notting Hill.

The board said grants from key supporters had let the Gate "deliver extraordinary work under incredible pressure", but concluded that short-term success was "not sustainable in the long-term".

The Gate lost its National Portfolio Organisation status from April 2023, a 100% cut in Arts Council England funding. The change was announced in November 2022, after the company moved to Theatro Technis in Camden that July, having left its Notting Hill home after the pandemic because of the venue's physical accessibility limits.

The company said it then became a producer-led organisation, keeping its founding mission while developing new ways of working with artists and audiences. Since leaving the national portfolio in 2022 it has employed 128 freelancers and reached more than 300 participants through Gateways, its programme of workshops, masterclasses, networking and artist development.

Recent productions

The 2023 season at Theatro Technis featured Bootycandy, HOT IN HERE and Brassic FM, the company said. Wish You Were Here, staged there in 2024, sold out and reached 150% of its financial projection. The company said 89% of that audience was attending the Gate for the first time.

Scenes from the Climate Era, directed by artistic lead Atri Banerjee at the Playground Theatre in 2025, won an OffWestEnd Award for Best Production, according to WhatsOnStage. The company said its partnership with Woven Voices produced record submissions for the Woven Voices Prize for Playwriting, which it describes as the UK's only prize for first-generation migrant artists.

History

The Gate was founded in 1979 above a pub in Notting Hill, with a mission to bring international theatre to London audiences. Theatre Weekly described it as one of the UK's most distinctive theatre companies, known for introducing international voices to London and nurturing generations of theatre-makers.

What the board and staff said

Rahul Streatfeild-Sinha, chair of the board, said the decision was taken "with an extremely heavy heart" and called the closure "a profound loss". He praised the staff, whose "perspicacity has been tremendous in keeping the company going these last years".

Interim executive director Alice Linnane said the closure was "an acute loss for our industry and for artists". She said funding that reduces in real terms year on year, rising costs and a fiercely competitive fundraising environment had left many arts organisations "living hand-to-mouth".

Banerjee said the Gate had always understood that "looking outward is the best way to look more closely at oneself". He said the international, experimental and generous spirit it championed would continue in the artists and audiences changed by it.

What happens next

The company plans to spend its final weeks celebrating its history and the artists, audiences, staff and supporters who contributed. A private event marking the Gate's history is scheduled at the Royal Court Theatre on Sunday 20 September, Theatre Weekly reported.
