Airbnb plans AI travel agent launch in first half of 2027

Airbnb said on 5 November 2026 that it plans to launch an AI travel agent in the first half of 2027, moving beyond chatbots to a visual interface meant to keep trip planning inside Airbnb.

What Airbnb announced

The company set out the plan in its third-quarter shareholder letter on Thursday. It said the agent will build an interface around a guest's question instead of answering only in a chat window. Airbnb said the agent will draw on maps, photos, comparisons, calendars and itineraries and compose them in real time.

Airbnb had previously said to expect the agent sometime in the next year. It now says it will begin rolling it out to guests in the first half of 2027.

How the agent works

Chesky told analysts that people will not use one AI agent for everything. "Travel is aspirational," he said, and 80% of travelers say they enjoy spending time researching trips. He said general-purpose agents such as Muse and Instinct are good at simple routine tasks like making a restaurant reservation or scheduling an appointment, but planning a trip is different.

The agent draws from a library of hundreds of travel-specific interface components, Chesky said. He described the result as feeling "a little bit like generative UI," offering "the right interface at the right time."

Airbnb said its nearly 20 years of experience connecting hosts and guests is informing the design. The agent will help guests explore options, make decisions with the people they are traveling with and act inside Airbnb, the company said.

Some AI features already ship. Airbnb's results describe AI-assisted search for natural-language and voice prompts, AI-generated listing summaries and side-by-side comparisons.

Support after booking

The agent is also meant to handle tasks after a booking. Airbnb said it will be able to help guests change reservations, resolve payment issues, handle refunds, rebook stays and access 24-hour safety support. The company argues an outside agent cannot easily do those tasks because it lacks access to Airbnb's booking and support systems.

Airbnb already runs a support assistant in more than 50 languages. About 40% of all customer support issues were resolved without a human agent in the third quarter, up from roughly one-third in the previous quarter, the company said. That figure covers all support issues, not only conversations that began with the AI assistant. Support cost per booking fell more than 17% year on year, partly through improvements to its AI systems.

Results and outlook

The launch plan came with third-quarter revenue of $4.87 billion, up 19% and above Wall Street estimates. Airbnb raised its 2026 revenue growth forecast to the high teens from the mid-teens. The board authorized up to $12 billion more in share buybacks.

Chesky told analysts it was rare for a marketplace of Airbnb's size to reaccelerate growth. He said Q3 was the company's fastest revenue growth in more than three years. "Airbnb is back in growth mode," he said.

Over time, Airbnb expects the agent to help with homes, hotels, services and experiences. Services and experiences have become a bigger focus since its redesign last year. Airbnb has not named a specific launch date or the first markets for the rollout.
