Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production in Texas around mid-2027
Tesla will wind down Cybertruck production at Gigafactory Texas around mid-2027 to make room for more Cybercab output, Elon Musk said on 6 November 2026, after sales fell far short of his 250,000-a-year target.

Musk announces wind-down
In a post on X early on 6 November, Musk said Tesla "will be winding down production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to make room for increased Cybercab production." The Texas plant is the only one that builds the truck. Tesla did not respond to a request for comment from CNBC.
The post gave no firm end date and did not say whether the truck would move to another factory or stop for good. Replying to a user who called the news an end of an era, Musk said: "True, but the Cybertruck fleet will be around for a long time." Tesla began deliveries in late 2023.
Sales far below the target
Tesla does not break out Cybertruck deliveries. It reports them inside "Other Models," which delivered 8,295 vehicles in the third quarter of 2026, down 48% from a year earlier and the lowest since the second quarter of 2021, Electrek reported. With Model S and Model X production over since April, Electrek estimated that 7,000 to 8,000 of those were Cybertrucks, a pace of about 30,000 a year.
That is about 12% of the 250,000 units a year Tesla planned for the line, and roughly a quarter of the more than 125,000 units of installed capacity listed in its latest shareholder letter. Musk predicted in 2023 that Tesla could sell 250,000 Cybertrucks a year.
Cox Automotive, which counts US sales only, estimated 3,519 Cybertrucks in the first quarter of 2026, 3,744 in the second and 4,323 in the third, for 11,586 in the first nine months. For all of 2025 it counted 20,237 US sales, down 48.1% from 38,965 in 2024.
Electrek reported that Giga Texas has more than 10 million square feet of factory floor and that the Cybertruck line was already running at about a quarter of installed capacity. The truck never went on sale in Europe because it did not meet the required safety standards, the Guardian reported.
Prices raised after the announcement
Tesla stopped taking orders for the entry-level Dual Motor AWD trim, though its configurator still lists that version at a higher price, greyed out. The cheapest Cybertruck still orderable is the Premium AWD at $92,490, up from $84,990 in August. The Cyberbeast now costs $102,490, up from $99,990, Electrek reported.
It was the second increase in under three months: Tesla added $5,000 to two trims in August. The entry price for any orderable Cybertruck went from $69,990 to $92,490 in about 10 weeks, a 32% jump.
At the 2019 unveiling, Tesla promised a starting price of $39,990, Quartz reported. The company offered a dual-motor Cybertruck at $59,990 in February 2026 for "only the next 10 days," then pulled it, Electrek reported.
Musk companies bought some trucks
SpaceX bought 1,279 Cybertrucks in the fourth quarter of 2025, and Musk's companies took 1,339 in total, about 19% of US registrations that quarter, according to S&P Global Mobility data cited by Electrek. A SpaceX financial filing put its spending on the trucks at $131 million at Tesla's suggested retail price, CNBC reported.
What happens next
Tesla has started offering paid trips in the Cybercab in limited parts of Austin, Texas, the Guardian reported. Musk has said the Texas factory will also be used to build Optimus humanoid robots.
