Toyota will build Waymo's bZ4X robotaxi on its own assembly line

Toyota will build Waymo's next robotaxi, a custom bZ4X, with Waymo's self-driving hardware fitted at the same factory, the companies said on 30 October 2026. Initial testing and validation in Japan is scheduled for 2027, with the UK to follow.

The change is in the factory, not the software. For riders in Japan and Britain, it sets a vehicle and a rough order of events, but no service date. For competitors, it tests whether a robotaxi company can hand manufacturing to a partner and keep control of the technology.

What Toyota and Waymo actually announced

Toyota and Waymo said on 30 October 2026 that they will begin initial operations to test and validate an autonomous bZ4X fleet in Japan in 2027. Toyota will assemble the vehicles at its Takaoka plant in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture. Waymo's hardware goes in at the same site, not a separate workshop. The companies plan to deploy to the United Kingdom and other Waymo-serviced markets in following years.

The deal grew from an April 2025 preliminary agreement that committed the two companies only to explore working together. The 30 October announcement came 18 months later.

That earlier text also covered autonomous technology for personally owned Toyota cars, and both companies say that work continues. Dmitri Dolgov was blunt about market order. "We'll start with the right-hand drive markets in Japan and the UK," the Waymo co-CEO said. He said the partnership could extend beyond those two countries, without naming any.

Why building it on the line matters

Waymo has until now bought finished cars and retrofitted sensors, computers and extra wiring at a separate facility, including its Mesa, Arizona site. Retrofit work is slow and hard to repeat at volume, because sensors, wiring and calibration go in after the car leaves the line. The Verge reported that fitting hardware during assembly could remove redundant labour, bespoke brackets and secondary shipping, and could cut costs for Waymo.

That is an argument, not a demonstrated number. Neither company has said how much the change saves, how many vehicles it will build, or what each costs. Waymo has also not published sensor specifications for the bZ4X robotaxi.

The bZ4X will be Waymo's fourth vehicle platform, after the Jaguar I-Pace, the Zeekr-built Ojai and the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

That list shows what Waymo buys from each partner. The I-Pace is out of production, the Ojai comes from a Chinese contract manufacturer, and Ioniq 5 supply talks have not produced cars yet. A Toyota line gives Waymo a high-volume base vehicle that Toyota will make in the country where Waymo plans a commercial launch. Waymo has long positioned itself as a supplier of the Waymo Driver rather than an automaker, and each new platform tests whether that software travels between vehicles. The bZ4X is the first where the vehicle maker also assembles the hardware.

What riders get, and what is still missing

The robotaxi adds extra rear legroom, automatic doors, a power liftgate and ambient lighting. Toyota says the layout makes entry and exit easier for passengers who find ordinary cars difficult. The vehicle is designed for Level 4 operation. That means it drives without a human inside defined conditions such as mapped areas.

Riders in Japan and Britain still have no date to circle. Waymo has not announced test locations inside Japan.

In Tokyo, Waymo is working with taxi operator Nihon Kotsu and ride-hailing app GO on fully driverless commercial rides in 2027. The target fleet is about 100 vehicles, subject to regulatory approval. Dolgov has said Waymo's cars are up to 20 times safer than human drivers on serious crash injuries where it operates. That is the company's own figure, not independently checked.

Gagadget reported that AutoNext read the Japan and UK framing as a sign the robotaxi is right-hand-drive only, which would leave continental Europe out for now.

What happens next

Initial testing and validation in Japan will take place in 2027. The UK is the first named market after Japan, and neither company has given dates, prices or volumes for Britain. Waymo has been testing Jaguar I-Pace cars in London, pending permits, and its Munich plans rest on the Jaguar, not the Toyota.

Toyota and Waymo said they will keep exploring autonomous technology for personally owned Toyota vehicles, plus safety work with Woven by Toyota. Tokyo commercial service remains subject to regulatory approval.
