NHTSA upgraded Ford 1.0-liter EcoBoost timing belt probe to engineering analysis
NHTSA said on Monday it upgraded its Ford 1.0-liter EcoBoost timing belt investigation to an engineering analysis, a step covering an estimated 135,551 vehicles and required before the agency could seek a recall.

NHTSA said the upgrade covers an estimated 135,551 vehicles: 2014-2017 Fiesta, 2015-2018 Focus with manual transmissions, certain 2016-2018 Focus with automatic gearboxes, and 2018-2021 EcoSport. The agency said it had 355 reports of a low oil pressure warning light appearing just before a complete or significant loss of power while driving, about eight times the 44 complaints that opened the investigation in December 2025.
The engineering analysis is the stage at which NHTSA runs component and vehicle testing. It is a required step before the agency could seek to compel Ford to issue a recall.
Why NHTSA upgraded the probe
The original investigation covered 2015-2017 Fiesta and 2015-2018 Focus models with manual transmissions. NHTSA added the EcoSport and automatic Focus models because they use a similar wet timing belt design.
NHTSA said its case rests on failure rates, information from Ford, a preliminary engine teardown and earlier recalls involving lost oil pressure with driver warnings. The agency said the evidence points to an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety.
How the belt fails
NHTSA said the 1.0-liter EcoBoost uses a wet timing belt that runs submerged in engine oil. As the belt wears, it sheds material into the crankcase. That debris can collect on the oil pump pickup screen, restricting oil flow until the engine seizes.
Drivers get little notice. NHTSA said some saw a low oil pressure light seconds before the engine died, while others saw nothing. The agency said the average reported failure occurred at about 70,000 miles, and 98% of failures happened before Ford's original 150,000-mile replacement interval.
Teardowns and surveys found failures on engines with documented, routine oil changes, NHTSA said. Some owners reported repair bills in the thousands of dollars. One driver on a highway in Wilmington, Delaware, said the oil pressure light came on and within an eighth of a mile his 2017 Ford Focus "lost all power and the engine began to sound like a tank."
Ford's response
In June, Ford told NHTSA it would run a global service program for vehicles with the 1.0-liter Fox Classic timing belt. The program cuts the replacement interval to 100,000 miles or six years from 150,000 miles or 10 years.
Ford spokesperson Mike Levine said the US customer satisfaction program covers about 147,000 vehicles, including the 2014-2017 Fiesta, 2015-2021 EcoSport and 2015-2018 Focus. It is not a recall. Ford reimburses eligible customers who previously paid for engine repairs or replacement due to a timing belt-related issue, Levine said.
Reuters reported Ford had no immediate comment on the upgrade. The Detroit News quoted Levine saying the company is notifying customers of the revised interval and is "working with NHTSA as it continues to investigate."
What happens next
NHTSA will continue component and vehicle testing through the engineering analysis. The agency said its findings could lead to further action, including a recall. All three models are discontinued. Ford remains under an independent federal monitor overseeing its recall processes, data analytics and compliance.
