United announces 10 new international destinations for 2027, eight from Newark
United Airlines said on 25 August 2026 it will add 10 international destinations and 13 routes in 2027, the largest expansion of its international network, with eight of the new cities served from Newark.

The 13 routes include the first U.S. nonstops to Slovenia and Luxembourg, and United says eight of the 10 new cities will have no nonstop service from any other U.S. carrier. Flights begin as early as March 2027.
Most of the new routes start between late March and early June. San Francisco gets three weekly flights to Okinawa from 27 March 2027 on a Boeing 777-200ER. Washington Dulles gets daily Toulouse service from 26 April on the A321XLR. From Newark, Luxembourg starts daily on 2 April and Ljubljana flies four times a week from 12 May. Olbia follows three times a week from 27 May, and Catania four times a week from 28 May. Ibiza begins four times a week from 31 May and Valencia three times a week from 2 June. Marseille runs daily from 4 June, and Terceira three times a week from 9 June.
United also added three routes to cities it already serves: Los Angeles to Osaka from 27 March, Denver to Paris from 27 May and Washington Dulles to Milan from 28 May.
San Francisco to Tel Aviv resumes on 28 March. United says it offers the most flights and seats from the U.S. across the Atlantic and Pacific of any airline, and already serves more than 160 international destinations.
Seasonality shapes the Newark schedule. Simple Flying reported that 12 of the 18 new and returning Newark routes are seasonal, and that Luxembourg is the only year-round addition among the new European cities.
A single-aisle jet opens the thinner markets
Five of the new destinations depend on the A321XLR: Luxembourg, Toulouse, Ibiza, Valencia and Marseille. The jet has 20 Polaris suites and 12 Premium Plus seats, which United says is 16 more premium seats than on its Boeing 757-200. Free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members, 4K OLED screens and an economy snack bar round out the cabin.
The A321XLR starts domestic flying in September 2026 and its first international flights on 1 December 2026, from Washington Dulles to Amsterdam and Dublin.
United's case for the smaller jet is that it can serve cities where a widebody would not be justified. Valencia has had limited long-haul links to North America; Ibiza is a summer leisure market.
Slots, fares and returning routes
Scott Kirby, United's chief executive, credits the Newark build-out to federal slot allocations. "The FAA has, after years, finally done what we asked and slotted, and now Newark is the most reliable of the three New York airports," he told CBS News. That reliability, he said, "enables us to add eight new destinations out of Newark across the Atlantic." United says it has added 58 international destinations since 2017.
Airfares were up more than 25% in July from a year earlier, though Kirby says average fares remain 13% below pre-pandemic levels.
Patrick Quayle, United's senior vice president of global network planning, says nothing from the 2026 batch is being cut. Everything from summer 2026 is coming back, he told Simple Flying, and United is "not dropping any routes in order to fund the next round of expansion." Split, Bari, Glasgow and Santiago de Compostela launched in summer 2026; all four return next summer and account for 17 weekly Newark departures at peak.
What happens next
Every new route still needs government approval, United said. Tickets for the 2027 destinations went on sale on 25 August, the day of the announcement, and tickets for the first international A321XLR flights go on sale on 27 August.
