Francis Halzen awarded 2026 Nobel physics prize for IceCube neutrino discovery

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded Francis Halzen the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics on 6 October for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos.

Francis Halzen awarded 2026 Nobel physics prize for IceCube neutrino discovery

Prize cites IceCube and astrophysical neutrinos

Halzen was the sole physics laureate in 2026. The citation names two linked achievements: his work on the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin. IceCube is a cubic kilometer of ice at the South Pole fitted with light sensors. Euronews reported that it was built between 2004 and 2010 and that the project now involves more than 450 people from 14 countries.

What IceCube detected

The discovery behind the prize is IceCube's detection of high-energy neutrinos from outside the Milky Way. Neutrinos rarely interact with matter, so they can travel in straight lines for very long distances. When a high-energy neutrino interacts in the detector, it can produce a bright path of light. Researchers trace that line backward to estimate where it came from, Kayla DeHolton, an assistant professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Mississippi and a member of the IceCube team, said.

The University of Mississippi said IceCube sits nearly a mile and a half beneath the surface near the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. It said a neutrino is at least 1 million times lighter than an electron and that more than a billion pass through a thumbnail every second. DeHolton said neutrinos from the sun are abundant but have much lower energy than the ones IceCube studies, which originate outside the Milky Way. The observatory has 5,160 sensors embedded in ice, the university said.

Quartz, citing IceCube's research page, reported that IceCube identified a blazar as the earliest probable source of high-energy neutrinos. Gamma rays and lower-energy photons had registered the same object, so agreement between separate messengers gave astronomers firmer ground for tying neutrinos to a distant source.

Why the result matters

Understanding where neutrinos come from can tell physicists about high-energy areas in galaxies outside our own, DeHolton said. "Neutrinos function like little cosmic messengers, and understanding them helps us understand what's happening inside galaxies," she said. The Nobel committee said the neutrino interactions collected by IceCube will provide new knowledge about the violent settings in which high-energy neutrinos can be created and could reveal previously unknown cosmic phenomena. Mark Pearce, chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics, said Halzen led an international team of researchers and engineers who "provided us with a fantastic instrument," and that his "tenacity and scientific vision" paved the way for a new kind of astronomy, ST Daily reported.

Halzen's reaction

Halzen, IceCube's principal investigator, said the award was "a great relief" and "a celebration of a very unusual project." "The success of this project involved the diligence and hard work of the many wonderful collaborators I've had the pleasure to work with," he said, according to the University of Mississippi.

Science and health

Sofia Marchetti covers science and health for FLASH24, working from primary literature, preprints, and agency data rather than press releases. She checks sample sizes, confidence intervals, and whether a study's numbers match its abstract before filing. She interviews researchers and clinicians directly, tracks conference calendars for embargoed results, and compares new findings with earlier trials on the same question. Outside the newsroom she works on materials physics and stargazes through a home telescope, which keeps her close to how measurement error actually behaves. She does not publish a health claim without a named source and the underlying data.
