Reddit tests search ads as AI search drains publisher referrals

Reddit began testing ads in its search results on 3 November, days after warning investors that AI-driven search is cutting its traffic. The company guided fourth-quarter sales to $1 billion to $1.03 billion, below the $1.05 billion expected.

Reddit tests search ads as AI search drains publisher referrals

Reddit puts ads inside search

The test is an initial one. Reddit said only a select group of eligible advertisers can buy the new placements for now.

The stakes go beyond Reddit. Search referrals are shrinking across the web, so platforms are building ad products inside their own walls while the clicks that once carried publishers' advertising disappear. Advertisers get placements aimed at users who show high purchase intent, the company said.

Reddit said ads may appear based on contextual relevance to a user's search query. A search for "espresso station" might show ads for espresso machines, coffee or mugs. Screenshots the company shared showed the ads near the top of search results.

The referral slide behind the test

Reddit is not alone in watching referrals shrink. Chartbeat's third-quarter 2026 audience report found search engines accounted for 12 percent of publisher pageviews in North America, down from 21 percent a year earlier.

Europe shows the same direction at different speeds. Northern Europe fell from 19 percent to 13 percent, Southern Europe from 33 percent to 25 percent, and Central and Eastern Europe from 27 percent to 19 percent. Africa moved the other way, rising from 41 percent to 46 percent. Chartbeat measures search's share of total pageviews, not absolute volumes, so a lower share does not by itself prove fewer search visits.

Google's AI search earns less

Google is feeling the same shift in its own accounts. Alphabet shares fell more than 11 percent in a single session after the company disclosed that AI search earns less than its traditional ad model, wiping out more than $500 billion in market value. The BBC put the share drop at over 12 percent and the loss at just over $500bn.

Third-quarter revenue was $127.6 billion, up 25 percent year on year, while capital expenditure more than doubled to $51.4 billion. Search revenue rose 12 percent to $63.3 billion. That compared with 14.5 percent growth in the same period a year earlier. Chief business officer Philipp Schindler said on the earnings call that the slower growth reflected "lower monetization we're seeing in AI Mode".

Small publishers take the hardest hit

Size decides how much it hurts. Chartbeat data reported by Axios showed small publishers lost 60 percent of search referrals over two years. Medium-sized publishers lost 47 percent and larger ones 22 percent.

Data compiled by Axios showed monthly visits to top news sites fell from more than 70 million in July 2024 to just over 47 million in July 2026. Media leaders who responded to a Reuters Institute survey predicted traffic to their websites would fall by nearly half over the next three years.

What happens next

Reddit is also moving most of its content behind a login. CEO Steve Huffman said on the earnings call that a logged-in model would improve ad targeting.

Reddit suggested the search ads will expand beyond the first phase.
