Cloud infrastructure revenue hits $168B as AI takes a third of the market

Worldwide cloud infrastructure services revenue reached $168 billion in the third quarter of 2026. It was up 55% from a year earlier, Data Center Knowledge reported on 3 November, citing Synergy Research Group.

Cloud infrastructure revenue hits $168B as AI takes a third of the market

For enterprise buyers, that $168 billion quarter means more cloud options. It does not necessarily mean capacity where they need it. Power and construction schedules lag the spending. For investors, cloud revenue growth is now the cleanest test of AI capital spending. The spread between Azure, Google Cloud and AWS shows returns are uneven. How much of the AI share turns into durable profit rather than higher-priced capacity is still unknown.

A $168 billion quarter, still accelerating

Synergy Research Group put the exact figure at $167.7 billion, up 55% from the third quarter of 2025. The market has doubled in eight quarters.

AI-specific services now account for roughly one-third of the total. Synergy released the findings on 29 October 2026. The sector's growth rate rose for the 12th successive quarter. Trailing 12-month revenue reached $558 billion. Share remains concentrated: Amazon held 26% of worldwide cloud infrastructure revenue, Microsoft 19% and Google 16%. Microsoft and Google grew faster than Amazon. Oracle and neoclouds including CoreWeave, Crusoe and Nebius were among the fastest-growing companies outside the top three.

Cloud growth becomes the AI scorecard

BMI said cloud revenue growth has become the main measure of whether US tech companies are turning AI investment into returns. Investors are scrutinising cash flow and infrastructure costs, the research house said. In the third quarter Azure grew 48% year on year, Google Cloud 103% and AWS 39.3%, according to BMI. Google Cloud revenue reached $30.7 billion at a 36.2% operating margin. AWS reached $46 billion, its sixth consecutive quarter of accelerating growth. Microsoft Cloud revenue rose 30% to $63.9 billion. Azure reached $33.2 billion, up 48%.

Microsoft's commercial remaining performance obligation, contracted revenue not yet recognised, rose 73% to $677 billion.

Demand is not the bottleneck

Synergy chief analyst John Dinsdale told Data Center Knowledge that three factors drive the surge. Additional capacity is coming online, pricing is higher, and the mix is shifting toward more expensive AI services. "A lot of the additional capacity that is coming online is specifically targeting more valuable, higher-priced AI services," he said. JLL found hyperscalers accounted for 59% of North American data center tenant demand. Neoclouds accounted for 11% and AI companies 7%. JLL said another 28 GW of owner-occupied capacity remained under construction. CBRE counted 7,481 MW under construction across eight primary North American markets in the first half of 2026, up 24.8% year on year. More than 80% had prelease commitments, against 74.3% a year earlier.

Power constraints kept extending completion schedules, leaving customers competing for capacity not yet delivered.

Microsoft chief financial officer Amy Hood said customer demand continues to exceed available supply, though efficiency gains help serve more customers.

The capex bill behind the revenue

Microsoft spent $45.2 billion on capital expenditure in the September quarter. It expects more than $50 billion in the December quarter. It projects calendar 2026 capex at about $170 billion. Citi estimates global AI capital expenditures will reach $1.68 trillion in 2027, up 64% from 2026. Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Meta are expected to account for about 64% of that spending. Dell'Oro Group projects global data center capital spending will exceed $3 trillion by 2030.

Citi also raised its AI services revenue forecasts by 9% for 2026, 7% for 2027 and 17% for 2028. The largest revision came in the final year. Google Cloud had 2,600 customers consume more than 100 billion tokens over the past year, up from 2,000 in the second quarter. Microsoft 365 Copilot customer growth on consumption-based billing exceeded 75% quarter on quarter.

What happens next

Microsoft guided December-quarter revenue to $96 billion to $97.1 billion, with Azure growth of 49% to 50% in constant currency. Amazon has guided for AWS growth above 40% in both fiscal 2027 and fiscal 2028.
