Reddit puts ads in search results as AI search drains publisher traffic

Reddit said on Tuesday 3 November 2026 that it is testing ads in search results with a select group of eligible advertisers. The move follows fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $1 billion to $1.03 billion, below the $1.05 billion expected.

Reddit puts ads in search results as AI search drains publisher traffic

Reddit sells the search box

Ads will appear "based on a range of factors, including contextual relevance to a user's search query," the company said in its announcement. Its examples: a search for "espresso station" might return espresso machines, coffee or mugs. A search for "home office setup" could return monitors, desks and chairs. Reddit said it will study how users respond. It will refine the format over time.

The free referral from a search engine is shrinking. Platforms are trying to earn from the search box they still own. Readers should expect more ads near the top of results, and more content behind a login.

Engadget reported Reddit wants to make money from "high purchase" intent. Those users come to Reddit for buying advice.

Reddit's user numbers explain the hurry. Global daily active users were flat quarter over quarter at 130.3 million in the third quarter. US daily active users fell from 53.2 million in the second quarter to 50.7 million. Reddit said daily active users could decline to a low double-digit percentage by the fourth quarter if the trend continues. The company beat Wall Street's estimates for revenue and earnings per share. The stock still fell.

The referral floor is falling

Chartbeat's third-quarter 2026 audience report found search engines accounted for 12% of publisher pageviews in North America, down from 21% a year earlier. Northern Europe fell from 19% to 13%, Southern Europe from 33% to 25%, and Central and Eastern Europe from 27% to 19%. Africa moved the other way, from 41% to 46%. Chartbeat framed that gap as a difference in how audiences reach online content.

Those are shares, not volumes. Chartbeat measures search's share of total pageviews, so a falling share does not mean search visits fell by the same amount.

Search platforms have folded generative AI into their results. They serve summaries and direct answers. That reduces the need to visit the sites that published the information in the first place.

Longer-run figures from the same firm are blunter. Pageviews from Google Search across Chartbeat's publisher network fell 34% between December 2024 and December 2025. Traffic from Google Discover fell 16% over the same period. Referrals from ChatGPT grew more than 200% year on year, but chatbots still accounted for less than 1% of total pageviews. The replacement is growing quickly from a very small base.

Size decides who bleeds most. Small publishers lost 60% of their search referrals over two years, against 47% for medium-sized publishers and 22% for larger organisations. Smaller publishers also have fewer resources for audience development, subscriptions and newsletters.

Google's AI search earns less

The squeeze runs both ways. Alphabet shares fell more than 11% in a single session, wiping out more than $500 billion in market value. Investors sold after Google disclosed that its AI search features earn less than its traditional search ads.

Google reported third-quarter revenue of $127.6 billion, up 25% year over year. Capital expenditures more than doubled from a year earlier to $51.4 billion. Search revenue rose 12% to $63.3 billion, short of the 14.5% growth it posted in the same period a year earlier.

According to Search Engine Land, Philipp Schindler blamed "lower monetization we're seeing in AI Mode." He is chief business officer.

He said Google Search fielded more queries than ever. More searches, less money on each one. AI Mode works more like a chatbot than a list of ten blue links, which is where the gap opens.

Walls, ads and the next quarter

Reddit's other answer is a wall. The company plans a shift to a logged-in experience, starting in markets outside the US. It says the move protects its site from unauthorised AI scraping and raises its value to advertisers. Logged-in users hand over better targeting signals, the same argument behind the search ads.

CEO Steve Huffman spoke on last week's earnings call. He told analysts a logged-in model would help improve ad targeting. "At this point, we're the only platform that doesn't do this," he said.

Two things remain unstated. Reddit did not say how often ads may appear. It suggested the format would eventually expand, but gave no timetable.

For publishers, the arithmetic is unforgiving. Search referrals are falling in most regions Chartbeat tracks. AI referrals are under 1% of pageviews. The platforms that once sent the clicks now keep the searches and sell them. Reddit's fourth-quarter guidance will show whether that trade works for Reddit. It will not show what replaces the traffic publishers have already lost.
